How to add/maintain Useful Links on the Home Page

Introduction

This help topic describes how to add and maintain a list of links to other websites or online services, which will appear on the OPAC Home Page in the Useful Links gadget. Note that the Useful Links gadget must be enabled (see the help topic on configuring Home Page content). Even if the gadget is enabled, it won’t appear if there are no links to display; you must have at list one for the gadget to be revealed.

  • Log in as a Library Admin User and click on Library Admin.
  • Click on OPAC, and then under Useful Links, click Add Useful Link to open the Add New Useful Link window, as below.
  • Use the fields on the Link Source tab to set the destination for you link.
    • URL Path: enter a web address (URL) here to link to an external website.
    • Hosted file: choose to link to a file that has already been uploaded to SLLS.
    • Local file: upload a new file to link to, from your local PC/network.
  • Click on the More tab to view more options for the link (as below).

  • The options here are as follows:
    • Display Text: whatever text you enter here will be displayed instead of the ‘naked’ URL. For example, Bailey Solutions instead of https://baileysolutions.co.uk/. This is especially helpful where the URL is long or confusing.
    • Hover Tip Text: further descriptive text that will be displayed if a user hovers their mouse cursor over the link.
    • Target: choose whether the target of your link should open in the user’s current browser tab, or in a new browser tab.
    • Login and Password: enter credentials to log in to the target website, if applicable.
  • Click Add Link to save.
  • Log in as a Library Admin User and click on Library Admin.
  • Click on OPAC, and then under Useful Links, click Maintain Useful Links to open the Useful Links screen, as below.

  • To add a new link, click the Add New button, then follow the instructions above.
  • To delete a link, click the bin/trash icon at the end of the relevant row.
  • To edit a link, click the pencil icon. This will open the Edit Useful Link window, as below.
  • Note that two attributes appear here that do not appear when adding a new link:
    • Enabled?: untick this box to prevent the link from appearing in the Useful Links gadget.
    • Position in List: use this to change the order of the links. By default, this will be set to 0 and the links will be listed in alphabetical order.
  • Don’t forget to Save Changes.
